Fascinating Chinese Herbs

Did you know that Chinese herbs correspond to our internal organs—the five zangs? Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) emphasizes the connection between humans and the universe. This philosophy extends to herbal medicine as well.

The flowers of plants correspond to the heart. Many flower buds even resemble the shape of the heart, don’t they?

The branches and stems correspond to the liver, which governs stretching and the smooth flow of qi.

The roots and rhizomes correspond to the spleen, as they transport energy through the soil to nourish the stems, leaves, and flowers—just like the spleen governs transformation and transportation.

The leaves correspond to the lungs. Leaves absorb oxygen and carry out photosynthesis to nourish the plant—much like the lungs, known as the “canopy of organs,” distribute ancestral qi throughout the body.

Finally, the seeds correspond to the kidneys—they are the fruit, the source of reproduction and the continuation of life.
