Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is a chronic illness characterized by persistent or recurrent episodes of extreme fatigue, and its exact cause remains unclear. After being diagnosed with CFS, treatment typically focuses on comprehensive management, symptom relief, and improving quality of life. This may include lifestyle adjustments, targeted supplementation with vitamins and coenzymes, and psychological therapy. Recent studies have suggested that CFS may be associated with the WASF3 cellular protein, but further clinical research is still lacking.

In recent years, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and acupuncture have gradually gained attention as alternative treatment options for CFS.

From the perspective of TCM syndrome differentiation, since the spleen governs the muscles and is responsible for transportation and transformation, treatment often starts with regulating the spleen. Based on clinical symptoms, CFS can generally be categorized into the following TCM patterns:

  • Liver-Spleen Disharmony: irritability, depression, distention in the chest and hypochondria, abdominal bloating, loose stools, fatigue, and lack of strength

  • Disharmony of Spleen and Stomach: tiredness, poor appetite, abdominal bloating, loose stools, and a sallow complexion

  • Spleen and Kidney Yang Deficiency: cold limbs, fatigue, weakness, soreness in the lower back and knees, and frequent nighttime urination

  • Heart and Spleen Deficiency: fatigue, forgetfulness, insomnia, palpitations, and poor appetite

  • Spleen and Lung Qi-Yin Deficiency: fatigue, dry mouth and throat, night sweats, irritability, and insomnia

  • Dampness Obstructing the Middle Jiao: heaviness in the limbs and mental fatigue
